More than $40 million worth of gold, silver and other jewelry forfeited in an international money laundering investigation have arrived in Austin, Texas, announced Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer of the Criminal Division; Special Agent in Charge John P. Gilbride of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) New York Field Division; and Eugene C. Corcoran, U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of New York. The jewelry was originally seized as the result of Elsa Peretti® Sevillana™ Mesh bracelet money laundering investigation that identified two companies in the Colon Free Zone in Colon, Panama, that were responsible for laundering narcotics proceeds from the United States.
“This forfeiture of more than $40 million in jewelry should remind criminals around the globe that they will be found, prosecuted and stripped of assets that are not theirs to keep,” said Assistant Attorney General Lanny A. Breuer. “With increased international cooperation, we are steadfastly working to forfeit money launderers’! dirty assets and proving that, in fact, crime doesn’t pay.”
“This unique seizure represents a model of Paloma Picasso® Loving Heart bracelet cooperation, persistence and diligence,” said DEA Special Agent in Charge John P. Gilbride. “Criminals who attempt to thwart the efforts of international law enforcement through complex trade-based money laundering schemes will not triumph. The DEA along with our partners will continue to pursue all avenues to deny drug traffickers and money launderers the one thing they value the most – their profit.”
“The U.S. Marshals Service is proud to support our partners in the Drug Enforcement Administration and international law enforcement community in this highly successful asset seizure operation. This seizure demonstrates extreme skill, utilizing technology and Toggle bracelet outreach to our international partners spreading the footprints of justice and the rule of law across the globe,” said Eugene C. Corcoran, U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of New York! .
The investigation that resulted in this forfeiture led to! the fir st U.S. indictment of an offshore business engaged in the illicit black market peso exchange, a money laundering operation through which narcotics proceeds earned in the United States are exchanged for Colombian pesos and then used to purchase goods in the Colon Free Zone. During the course of the investigation, Yardena Hebroni and Eliahu Mizrani were Horse charm bracelet as major money launderers based in Panama. Hebroni and Mizrani used a wholesale jewelry business, Speed Joyeros S.A., and a related company identified as Argento Vivo S.A., to facilitate their illegal money laundering activities. Based on a joint investigation conducted with the government of Panama, Speed Joyeros S.A., Argento Vivo S.A., Hebroni and Mizrahi were charged with laundering millions of dollars in narcotics proceeds through their companies in Panama. Hebroni and both companies pleaded guilty to money laundering in the Eastern District of New York. Mizrahi, who had been a fugitive, later pleaded guilty to ! money laundering and was sentenced in February 2008.
According to evidence presented in the case, Hebroni and her companies were involved in a money laundering conspiracy that included coordinating and receiving drug proceeds from the United States through cash pick-ups, wire transfers, Elsa Peretti® Sevillana™ bracelet checks and third party bank checks. Specifically, Hebroni and Mizrahi operated and built Speed Joyeros S.A. and Argento Vivo S.A., which together did more than $100 million in business annually, knowing that the primarily Colombian-based customers were laundering millions of dollars in drug money from the United States through bulk purchases of jewelry. According to court documents, Speed Joyeros S.A. and Argento Vivo S.A. were heavily involved in the black market peso exchange.

You’re in a Shanghai alleyway, and a vendor shows you a Rolex. It’s $50-a fraction of the price of a genuine. What’s the harm? ST “You hardly have to leave your hotel to buy a counterfeit in Asia. It’s become a part of the tourist experience,” says Tim Phillips, author of a Tiffany Notes tag bracelet book on the subject. * Counterfeits are available in all Asian markets, including Bangkok’s Chatuchak, Hong Kong’s Stanley, and Beijing’s Silk Alley.
“China is far and away the world’s biggest supplier,” according to Phillips, who notes that Japan is Asia’s single exception.
The range of products runs the gamut, too. A shopper can find knockoff sunglasses (Oliver Peoples, Oakley), sneakers (Nike, Reebok), polo shirts (Izod, Ralph Lauren), and designer goods such as shoes (Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo), clothes (Lilly Pulitzer, Miss Sixty, Prada), Return to Tiffany™ mini heart tags bracelet jewelry (Tarina Tarantino necklaces). And anywhere you go, you are sure to find a knockoff Hermès Birkin bag, which Phillips calls a “counterfeit icon.”
Identifying fakes: The only way to ensure the real thing is to buy it in a branded store. “If it’s cheap or being sold in a market, it’s certainly a fake,” says Valerie Salembier, of Harper’s Bazaar, which publishes a shopper’s guide to Heart chain bracelet. Other giveaways are bad stitching, flimsy linings, misspelled logos, and handles that are glued, not stitched.
The risks: Penalties by Asian authorities on consumers buying fakes are little or none. Back home, the risks are more severe: If U.S. customs finds fakes, they can confiscate them. Consumers who then insist that they have the real thing are subject to Charm bracelet duties, “often more than the cost of the item,” says Angelo Mazza, a New York trademarks lawyer.
Consumers should also be aware of the potential impact of their buying decisions. “Smuggling is typically done by an organized group. Proceeds sometimes go to dubious ‘charities’ in the Middle East. Watches and other intricate items require the dexterity of children, and conditions in Charm bracelet factories are abysmal,” says Mazza. “There are documented cases of funds from the counterfeit trade going to terrorist organizations,” adds Randall Rabenold of Vaudra, Ltd., a brand protection company.

Hawass said he’s certain the pyramid base is that of King Menkauhor, an obscure pharaoh who ruled for about eight years more than 4,000 years ago. Also found was a ceremonial procession road dating to the Ptolemaic period (spanning 330 B.C.-30 B.C.).Cuban guards watch Lennon’s glasses, 24/7We’re not sure what’s more surprising-the fact that Cuba erected a bronze statue in honor of slain Beatle John Lennon, or that guards rotate in 12-hour, ’round-the-clock shifts to make sure no one makes off with Lennon’s iconic roundrimmed spectacles (a bronze replica pair; they never actually belonged to Lennon). Within weeks of the statue’s unveiling in 2000, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of John’s slaying (at which Fidel Elsa Peretti® Open Teardrop pendant made a surprise appearance and expressed regret at never having met Lennon), the original pair of glasses was swiped.
Those were replaced, but within weeks that pair was stolen, too. The thieves were never caught, and Havana officials began talking about ways to firmly affix a third set of glasses. They almost went with ones from a plain, golden-brown colored alloy, but in the end scrapped that in favor of rotating watchmen. The guards typically keep the glasses on their person, affixing them to Lennon’s face only when tourists make photo requests. It has always been thought that Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas and Peru’s biggest tourist Figure Eight pendant, was first brought to the attention of the outside world by Hiram Bingham, an American academic from Yale, who came upon the site in 1911. But now, a team of historians says Machu Picchu was discovered more than 40 years earlier by a German adventurer named Augusto Berns. One of the historians found a map in Peru’s national museum, where Berns’ activities were traced and documented, leading to the stunning conclusion. Berns’ objectives were less noble than Bingham’s. The historians say that after arriving at the site in 1867, he raided the citadel’s tombs, apparently with the knowledge and blessing of the Peruvian government. This man was so well spoken, I couldn’t work out whether he was posh or gay. He described how beautiful Dorset was, and said: “This village needs some comedy -please come.” He sounded so nice, I immediately said yes.
I got on the train to Dorchester and Mr Hitchen arrived in a big black car to collect me. He strode across the car park. White linen shirt undone, long silver necklaces round the neck, antique rings with transparent stones, greyish floppy hair, sandals. Frank Gehry® Fish Pendant looked very sexy for 60. He smelled of confidence and a Bentley interior. I can’t say I’m familiar with these types of smells but they did intrigue me.
We arrived at his theatre. It was 1950s, I-couldn’t-give-a-toss kind of decor. Hand-made artwork that his friends had painted, an old stage and a one-screen cinema. The village was so small, everyone had been out with each other at some point, or at least attempted to. The authence was great: all 200 of them laughed for two hours, then gave each other lifts home.
I was staying in Mr Hitchen’s 35-bedroomed Return to Tiffany™ Double Heart Pendant. Imagine Hogwarts without the speaking portraits. It’s not often that people are direct with strangers, and I quite admired his no-messing-about attitude. He said, “So how long have you been a show-off? You love that microphone, don’t you? And how much were your trousers?” I was becoming worried that this was all a euphemism for something more serious.
He invited me to tour the house; every Double square pendant had a four-poster bed. By his bed he had books by Nietzsche and sandals by Church’s.
I had been invited to perform at a Muslim wedding the next day. This was a surprise, as even my white friends wouldn’t risk having me perform on their big day. I had been worrying about it for weeks. Martin bombs straight into the bowl, crouching and reckless, occasion’ ally losing his board when attempting a wilder trick. Amber, his pretty 27-yearold girlfriend, who is studying to be an anesthesiologist, looks on affectionately. Brandon, meanwhile, though also a powerful skater, has the opposite style: He barely bends his knees as he hurtles down sheer angles, looking calm and moving with the elegance of a skier.
Money is tight. Martin settled a civil case last November stemming from a Graduated bead drop pendant bar fight. “Dude’s girlfriend was dating me, I ran into him at the bar, and he was like, ‘Come meet me in the parking lot,’ ” Martin says. “Well, the exact words were ‘You wrinkled old man, come get what you deserve.’ And I was dumb enough to go get what I deserved, which ended up being a $100,000 debit to my lifestyle.” One of the guys in thefight had a bat, but Tiffany box lock pendant relieved him of that and ended up putting two men in the hospital. He spent 45 days in jail.
Martin scrapes by, though: selling merchandise (and scrap metal) and cadging donations from ex-skaters. “There’s a huge loyalty in skating,” he says. “The guilt is worse than Catholic if you leave.” There’s also a Skatopia documentary in the works. “That’ll end up being a great résumé Tiffany Notes Pendant for the filmmaker,” Martin says. “Meanwhile, I’ll be here picking through the embers. Scavenging copper wire out of old houses like some hobo.” Up on the hill, some teenagers are skating the Lula Bowl. The only thing visible from down here is the bowl’s cement ridge. Occasionally, a black-clad figure pops to the surface of the bowl. You can’t see their skateboards. The boys seem to be floating. They look like kites.
There’s an odd purity to Martin’s vision. As he likes to say, I Love You lock charm figured out a way to replace money with work and to give visitors whose only knowledge of anarchy comes from punk-rock songs a taste of the absolute freedom they think they want. “We just like to show young kids once in a while that there’s some hope for them,” he says. “That people can live a dream, and you don’t have to be rich. It’s hard as hell to make a living out here. But as far as freedom goes?” Martin tosses a baseball to one of the dogs. “It’s retarded,” he continues. “Everyone always refers to Field of Dreams when they talk about Skatopia. But I’ve always lived this way. Former girlfriends would tell me, ‘You’re just gonna be a lonely old man with all this stuff. No one’s ever gonna use it.’ And I’d say, ‘Bet not.’ ”

THE MOST CONCENTRATED PERIods of mayhem occur during the annual summer Bowl Bash, when hundreds of kids descend on Rutland for Skatopia’s answer to Woodstock. The first Bowl Bash was June ist, 1996; the first band to play was an all-gay punk band called Stupid America. The bands play in the loft of the barn. The kids, meanwhile, camp out on the property, skate, drink, shoot bottle rockets at one another, drive recklessly on dirt tracks and otherwise celebrate the fact that freedom’s just another word for plenty left to burn. Occasionally events get out of hand. At this year’s Bash, a drunk girl accidentally backed into a Elsa Peretti® Open Heart charm car, which prompted some kids to smash the windows of her car with rocks and their skateboards. By the time Martin arrived on the scene, the girl had beaten one of the boys with a two-by-four. She ended up abandoning the car. When the police came a few weeks later, someone had hidden the vehicle in the woods.
There’s little tension between Martin and his neighbors. As in many relatively isolated communities, the right to Tiffany Notes locket and chain whatever the hell you want on your own property is sacrosanct in Meigs County, where Skatopia is located. Meigs is coalmining country and has long been one of Ohio’s poorest corners. But it’s also attractive to hippies and dropouts looking to fly under the radar. Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen lives nearby, on his H9-acre Fur Peace Ranch. (Martin says he heard that Kaukonen forbade his daughter from coming to Skatopia.)
Martin and his younger brother began Tiffany Nature Dragonfly pendant in the early Seventies. His parents split up when he was five, and he grew up with his mother, an accountant, in Vienna, West Virginia, a suburban town just over the Ohio state line. In the basement of his childhood home, Martin built his very first skateboard ramp – “probably the first ramp in West Virginia,” he says – by nailing some closet doors to a workbench and using linoleum to smooth the angles. Throughout his 20s and early 30s, Martin skated, took classes and worked odd jobs in places like Orlando. He also raised (and home-schooled) Brandon as a single dad. Tiffany Nature butterfly pendant could not be less like his father: tall, skinny and bearded, he looks vaguely Amish, and unless directly engaged, he rarely speaks. “Brandon’s an anchorite,” Martin says. “He’s my proudest accomplishment to date.”
Back at the barn, Martin and Brandon climb up to the loft to demonstrate their skills. One level Airplane charm pendant, there’s a stage and a stripper pole, operational during Bowl Bashes. “There been a lot of sluts on that pole,” mutters another minion, a bearded mechanic named Nick who gets Martin’s cars running, looks like Waylon Jennings and reeks of alcohol. He is sipping out of a plastic SpongeBob SquarePants cup bearing the message THIS is THE BEST DAY EVER. A tattered American flag hangs over a severe-looking i3-foot-deep bowl. Graffiti covers the barn’s exposed wooden beams: “Eatin’ Ain’t Cheatin’,” “Hobbits Are Gay.”
